Setting goals is a task every single person should embrace. Quite often we only think of goal setting at New Year, but it’s actually something we can do at any time. Knowing what you want to achieve in your business gives you a reason to keep going, even when facing challenging times. The same is also true for personal goals.
Setting goals motivates us to take action every single day
Setting goals in every aspect of your life will keep you focused on what you want. Whether it’s starting/growing a business, buying your dream home or even losing weight to improve your health, knowing what you want allows you to put the necessary action steps in place. After all, nothing happens in life without taking action.
Successful People Who Set Goals
When we set goals that we don’t reach, we can become deflated and maybe avoid or dread the whole goal-setting process. But we shouldn’t let that stop us from going after what we want. Even the most successful celebrities and business owners have had their own failures but continued to set goals anyway.
Here’s some examples to inspire you…

Michael Jordan, was rejected by his high school basketball team because he was too short. After being told he would never play at a professional level, he trained even harder and visualised his name in a professional locker room.

Walt Disney was a high school drop-out, bankrupt at the age of 22 after his second company failed. After losing the rights to his first animated star, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, he started sketching an idea that would later become the beloved Mickey Mouse. When he proposed his idea for the Disney World theme park many bankers laughed at him, but he was determined not to give up.
Walt Disney overcame many failures and setbacks to become one of the worlds most famous names in family entertainment. Today the entire Disney franchise – including the many theme parks, movies, and merchandise – are worth many billions of dollars.
J K Rowling was a single mother, relying on unemployment benefits to feed her family. Twelve different publishers rejected her manuscript, and she was losing confidence in her book and feeling like a complete failure. She continued writing her book finding it theraputic and didn’t give up.
Despite numerous setbacks, J K Rowling finally found a publisher who agreed to publish Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone after the publisher’s daughter started reading the book and became entranced. The Harry Potter series has sold over 500 million books worldwide making it the best-selling book series in history. Not to mention JK Rowling was the first female to become a billionaire author.
“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.”
– J K Rowling
Think of Failures as Lessons Learned
Thomas Edison was labelled stupid by his teachers, yet at one point he held over 1,000 patents for new inventions. He is most famous for inventing the lightbulb. Edison is also known for the following quote…
